Permisos Hazmat

Federal hazmat registration and state permits.

What are hazmat permits?

Hazmat regulations sit at the intersection of FMCSA and PHMSA (Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration). The Hazardous Materials Regulations live in 49 CFR Parts 100–185. Carriers transporting hazmat in quantities requiring placards or transporting select agents, certain explosives, radioactive materials, or any quantity of certain chemicals must register with PHMSA under 49 CFR Part 107 Subpart G and obtain a Hazardous Materials Safety Permit when applicable.

Beyond federal registration, several states (Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and others) require their own hazmat permits with separate filings. Drivers handling hazmat need a hazmat endorsement on their CDL with TSA security threat assessment. Vehicles need proper placarding, shipping papers, and emergency response information per Part 172. Insurance minimums under 49 CFR § 387.9 increase to $1M, $5M, or higher depending on cargo class.

Who needs this

  • Carriers transporting placardable quantities of hazardous materials.
  • Carriers handling specific Hazardous Materials Safety Permit (HMSP) commodities — radioactive Class 7, certain explosives, methane in bulk, etc.
  • Tank truck operators carrying chemicals or petroleum products in bulk.
  • Drivers needing to add the hazmat endorsement to their CDL.

Nuestro proceso

  1. Classification review

We confirm cargo classification, packaging group, and whether HMSP applies.

  2. PHMSA registration

Annual hazmat registration filed with PHMSA — required even for one-time shipments above threshold.

  3. HMSP application

For carriers hauling permit-required commodities, we file with FMCSA.

  4. State permits

State-by-state filings (FL, MD, NJ, NY, OH, etc.) where applicable.

  5. Driver endorsement support

We coordinate the TSA hazmat threat assessment process for your drivers.

  6. Insurance coordination

    Confirm $1M / $5M minimums per § 387.9 and file the BMC-91X with FMCSA.
