What are IRP and IFTA?
The International Registration Plan (IRP) is a reciprocal vehicle-registration agreement among the 48 contiguous US states, DC, and 10 Canadian provinces. Carriers operating qualifying vehicles in two or more jurisdictions register through their base state and receive a single apportioned plate (also called a “prorate plate”) that authorizes operation in every jurisdiction listed on the cab card. Fees are calculated based on the percentage of total miles run in each jurisdiction.
The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is the parallel agreement covering fuel taxes. Instead of filing fuel-tax returns in every state where you bought fuel or drove, you file one consolidated quarterly return with your base jurisdiction. The fuel tax owed is calculated from your miles per state and your fuel purchases per state.
Both programs apply to “qualified motor vehicles” — generally vehicles with a GVWR over 26,000 lbs or with three or more axles. We register your fleet, file your quarterly IFTA returns, and reconcile the mileage and fuel-receipt records you provide.
