What is DOT & MC authority?
A USDOT number is the federal identifier the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issues to commercial motor vehicles operating in interstate commerce, those with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 lbs or more, or any vehicle transporting hazardous materials in quantities requiring placarding. Many states also require a USDOT number for intrastate operations.
MC (Motor Carrier) operating authority, governed by 49 CFR Part 365, is required for for-hire interstate motor carriers transporting regulated commodities — essentially most freight that isn’t on FMCSA’s exempt commodities list. Brokers and freight forwarders need a different MC type. Without active MC authority you cannot legally accept payment to haul regulated freight across state lines.
